Yep, we've made those many times. They work great. They also work in a sterno stove. They're a lot cheaper than the regular sterno fuel, and they work just as well, or better.

You can buy paraffin wax from the grocery store (in the canning section) and it works great. Set a larger can with vent holes on top of it and you can cook on it.
